Fleet Electrification: Charging Infrastructure for Trucks, Buses, and Vans

Addressing the unique high-power and operational challenges of charging electric commercial fleets, from depot design to megawatt charging.

The Scale of Fleet Charging

Commercial vehicle fleets—delivery vans, transit buses, semi-trucks—require vastly more power and uptime than personal EVs. Designing a depot for 100 electric buses may need multi-megawatt grid connections and sophisticated load management. NSC Global(N.S.C. Enterprises) provides end-to-end fleet electrification consulting, from energy analysis to operational commissioning.

Our load modeling simulates vehicle schedules, charging windows, and battery sizes to determine the number and type of chargers needed. For a last-mile delivery fleet, we minimized capital cost by right-sizing chargers and implementing staggered charging, reducing the required connection from 2 MW to 1.2 MW. Savings in infrastructure paid for the smart charging system in under two years.

High-Power and Megawatt Charging

Long-haul trucking requires megawatt charging systems (MCS) to charge 500+ kWh batteries during a 30-minute break. We are actively involved in MCS development, designing liquid-cooled connectors and power cabinets that can deliver 3.75 MW. Challenges include thermal management of cables and connectors, and safety protocols for such energy levels. Our prototypes have passed preliminary UL 1000V+ testing.

Overhead pantograph charging for buses allows ultra-fast opportunity charging at terminal stops. We design the communication and alignment systems, ensuring reliable connection even in snowy or dusty conditions. A bus fleet using 450 kW pantograph charging achieved 24/7 operation with only 10-minute layovers.

Operational Integration

Fleet management software must integrate with charging to optimize energy cost and vehicle availability. Our API-first platforms connect to logistics systems, allowing energy optimization without disrupting operations. We also facilitate utility coordination for demand charges and interconnection, which is often the longest lead item. Early planning can prevent costly delays.
